Sophia Heeren

Sophia Heeren, 97, of Chancellor, SD died Tuesday, July 1, 2014 at the Sanford USD Medical Center, Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Sophia Mae Wagner was born on May 3, 1917 at Carrington, North Dakota, the daughter of Wilheim and Anna (Rust) Wagner. At age two she moved with her family to Chancellor, South Dakota where she grew up and attended school graduating from Chancellor High School in 1934. Sophia was united in marriage to Luverne Heeren on November 23, 1944 at Germantown parsonage, rural Chancellor. They farmed the same farm in Home township, northwest of Chancellor most of their married life. In 1985 they moved into Chancellor. Luverne died on August 14, 2005, ending a marriage of over 60 years. Sophia was an active and faithful member of Germantown Presbyterian Church where she taught Sunday school and belonged to the Germantown Women In Church group. She was a 4H leader for many years. She enjoyed needlework, reading and was a passionate flower and vegetable gardener. Besides her parents and husband, Sophia was preceded in death by five siblings Minnie Weeldreyer, Gertie Otten, Herbert Wagner, Margaret Meyer and John Wagner. Grateful for having shared her life are three children: Gene Heeren and his wife, Linda, of Chancellor, Faye Dubbelde and her husband, Jack, of Chancellor and Don Heeren and his wife, Carol, of Parker; ten grandchildren: Tresa (Steve) Thill, Dan (Julie) Heeren, Angela (Lance) Jibben, Jason (Lisa) Dubbelde, Sara (Ryan) Bales, Luvern Dubbelde, Brian (Danielle) Dubbelde, Derek (Amber) Heeren, Jay (Kayla) Heeren, and Justin Heeren; 22 great-grand-children: Mickenzie and Chett Jibben, Kayleigh and Ellianna Thill, Taylor and Evan Dubbelde, Tucker Berens, Connor, Sophia and Lexi Bales, Sydney Raye, Paxton, Heston, Colston and Huckston Dubbelde, David, Elizabeth, Nathan, Joshua, Lydia, Grace and J.D. Heeren; sister-in-law, Lucille Heeren, Lennox plus several nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Services will begin at 10:30 a.m. Monday, July 7 at Germantown Presbyterian Church, rural Chancellor. Visitation also at Germantown will be from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday, with the family present and a prayer service, sharing time at 4 p.m.
