Patrick Harrington

Patrick Harrington, age 84, of Lennox, SD, passed away, January 18, 2025, at Avera Dougherty Hospice, Sioux Falls, SD. Patrick Joseph Harrington was born on June 3, 1940, at Armour, SD, the son of Raymond and Elizabeth (Westendorf) Harrington. He grew up in the Armour area, graduating from Armour High School in 1958. He then graduated from Barber College in Omaha, NE, and began work as a barber in Wagner. Pat entered the U.S. Navy in 1961, serving in Vietnam, and then received his honorable discharge in 1966. Pat owned and operated Pat's Barber Shop in Wagner, until selling the business in 1976, when he became a SD Deputy Fire Marshall, determining the cause and origin of fires through out the state. In 1984 he began work for INS Fire Investigations, covering areas of SD, MN, ND, WY and NE until retiring in 2007. On June 6, 1964 he was united in marriage to Vera Dammann at Armour. In 1975 the couple made their home in Lennox, until recently moving into Sioux Falls. Pat was a member of Saint Magdalen Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus, where he had served as Grand Knight, the Lennox American Legion and the Wagner Fire Department, where he had served as Chief. Pat enjoyed cooking, sometimes for large groups at family gatherings or American Legion events. He alos enjoyed a large hat collection. Besides his parents, Pat was preceded in death by his son, Michael in 2024 and brothers: Robert, Harold and James. Grateful for having shared his life are his wife, Vera; children: Gregory Harrington, Joseph (Tami) Harrington and Mary (LaVeryl) Van Ningen, all of Lennox; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren: Trever (Katie) Harrington, Jordon (Ciera) Harrington, their children: Raelynn, Ryan & River, Derrick (Maggie) VanNingen, Rachel (Braeden) Wallenstien and Danica VanNingen; siblings: Betty (Greg) Putman, Corsica, Joann (Darald) McElroy, Rapid City, Michael (Barb) Harrington, Tea, Jerry (Sara) Harrington, Armour, brother-in-law, Keith (Juleen) Dammann, Greenville, SC, as well as a host of other relatives and friends. Services will begin at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, January 25, 2025 at St. Magdalen Catholic Church, Lennox, SD, with burial to follow in the Mt. Olivet Cemetery. Visitation, with the family present, also at St. Magdalen Catholic Church, will begin at 5:00 p.m. Friday, January 24, with a prayer service and rosary at 6:00 p.m.
