LeRoy Fett

LeRoy Eldred Fett, 90, passed away on Wednesday, June 20, 2018. LeRoy was born December 17, 1927 on the family farm in Lincoln County, SD to William and Katie Cynthia (Riemann) Fett. He was the youngest of five sons. As a youngster, he attended Buboltz Country School District #53, enjoyed helping his older brothers on the farm, playing with the neighbor kids, overhauling tractors and "modifying" farm machinery. After serving two years in the Korean War with the 8th Cavalry Regiment, he was honorably discharged from the United States Army. He then met the lady who became his lifelong love and wife of over sixty years. He and Doris Mae Otten were married on June 7, 1957 at Chancellor Baptist Church, Chancellor SD. Following their marriage, they began their life together of farming and raising four children on the family farm. He remained there until his death. LeRoy enjoyed a simple life full of gratitude for the little things like a hot pot of coffee, a day at a steam show or farm sale, a bowl of ice cream after Sunday evening church, taking his grandkids for tractor rides or driving through the countryside surveying the crops. In addition, LeRoy surrounded himself with endless books, atlases and the daily Argus Leader crossword puzzles. He was an avid letter writer and story teller, gardener, an accomplished carpenter and had a lifelong love of steam engines and vintage farm equipment. LeRoy enjoyed many friendships made along life's way and the banter of conversation usually ending in a witty retort. He was an active participant in Gas & Steamers club, Buboltz District #53 School Board, Perry Township Board of Directors, Union Gospel Mission Board of Directors, held several leadership roles in Lennox Ebenezer Presbyterian Church and assisted in establishing Living Hope Community Church in Tea, SD. He lived under Christ's wings after accepting Jesus as his Savior during his time in Korea and enjoyed the fellowship he had with many church friends and pastors. Forever grateful for sharing in his life are his wife; his children, Phillip Eldred (Judy) Fett, Steven William Fett, Malenda Joy (Robert) Hoelscher and Cynthia Marie Fett; his grandchildren, Hannah Marie (Donald) Anding and Hayden Robert Hoelscher and his step grandchildren, Audrey (Cody) Belitz, Andrea (Clay) Glasgow, Sarah (Jason) Lehrkamp, Casey (Dan) Harmon and their children; Sydney, Alexis, Otto, Edward, Jesse, Halden and Annie. LeRoy is preceded in death by his parents and his brothers Marvin, Frederick, Chester and Dale. He was also blessed to have many dear sister and brother-in-law's, nieces, nephews, cousins and countless friends. The family is additionally grateful for the loving care provided by the volunteers of the Lennox Area Ambulance, staff of the Tea Medical Clinic and Pastor Reed over the past several years as LeRoy's health declined. Services will begin at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, June 23, 2018, at Lennox Ebenezer Presbyterian Church with burial to follow in the Chancellor Baptist Cemetery.
