Larry DeVries

Larry DeVries, 78, of Lennox, SD, passed away January 10, 2025, at Sanford USD Medical Center, Sioux Falls, SD. Larry Dean DeVries was born on June 15, 1946 at Lennox, SD, the son of Andrew and Marles (Knock) DeVries. He attended rural school through the eighth grade and then began working at age 14 to support his large family. In 1968, he entered to U.S. Army, serving in Vietnam for one year, and then was honorably discharged in 1970. On November 5, 1971 he was united in marriage to Sandra Miller at Lennox Ebenezer Presbyterian Church, Lennox. The couple made their home in Lennox. Larry worked for Morton Buildings, until a fall forced his early retirement in 2001. Larry was an active and faithful member of Lennox Ebenezer Presbyterian Church. He was a member of the Lennox Lions and the Lennox American Legion and served as a Project Coordinator for the American Legion Memorial in Lennox. With his family Larry sang in the DeVries Quartet. He enjoyed playing baseball in younger years and church softball, where he also served as a very strict umpire. Larry was a Minnesota Vikings fan and attended many years of the College Baseball World Series in Omaha. Most of all, Larry was a devoted husband, father and grandfather who deeply loved his family and attending their sporting, Aerial Performances and other events. Besides his parents, Larry was preceded in death by siblings: Leland DeVries, Lowell & Harriet DeVries and LeAnn Tatro. Grateful for having shared his life are his wife Sandra; daughters: Melissa (Drew) Kummer, Le Mars, IA and Andrea (Mike) Chayka, Summerset, SD; four grandchildren: Harleyann (Michael) Smith, Bryton Baker, Kaelee Chayka and Morgan Chayka; siblings: Laurna (Eric) Gustafson, Lorraine (Dan) VanGeest, Linda (Terry) Thompson, Lena (Thomas) Sanderson, Loretta (Ken) Lang, Lorin (Melanie) DeVries and Leota (David) Olsen, as well as host of other relatives and friends Services will begin at 11:00 a.m. Monday, January 20, 2025 at Lennox Ebenezer Presbyterian Church, with burial and military rites to follow at the Lennox Cemetery. Visitation, also at Lennox Ebenezer, with the family present, will be 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday, January 19.
