Ida Poppenga

Ida Poppenga, 92, died Thursday, February 2, 2012 at the Lennox Good Samaritan Center. Ida Dorothy DeNeui was born on a farm just west of Lennox, SD on September 8, 1919, the daughter of Charley R. and Jane (Harms) DeNeui. She grew up on a farm two miles west of Lennox where she attended Ashlawn #89 rural school. She graduated from Lennox High School in 1937 and then attended Mitchell Business College. She was employed as business manager at Lennox High School prior to her marriage. On April 10, 1941 Ida was united in marriage to Bernard E. Poppenga at Luverne, MN. They farmed two miles west of Lennox for 38 years and retired into Lennox in 1979. She had been employed as a bookkeeper at Cargill Inc. for a number of years. Her husband preceded her in death on September 14, 1999, ending a marriage of over 58 years. She continued living in Lennox since that time. Ida was a member of Second Reformed Church, where she was a member of the guild. She also had been a member of the Lennox Historical Society and was a 4-H leader in earlier years. Ida wrote weekly letters to her children and grandchildren for many years. Besides her husband she was preceded in death by her mother on September 1, 1950 and her father on April 14, 1987. Grateful for having shared her life are one son, Bernard Poppenga, Jr. and his wife, Patricia, of Littleton, Colorado; three daughters: Norma Kruger of Twin Brooks, SD, Carol Diamond and her husband, Charles, of Jenkintown, PA and Janice (Ben Hudgens) Poppenga of Omaha, NE; nine grandchildren: Monica (Greg Rachwal) Kruger, David (Nancy) Kruger, DeLyle (Wendy) Kruger, Kathy (Wayne) Hammond, Tracy Ehlers, Chad Diamond, Curtis Diamond, Lisa (Scott) Yenne and Gina (John) Hendren; 16 great-grand children; three sisters-in-law: Gladys (Orwin) Fodness of Sioux Falls, Nettie Poppenga and Clara Poppenga, both of Lennox; plus several nieces, nephews and other relatives. Services will begin at 1:30 p.m. Monday, February 6, at Second Reformed Church, Lennox, SD with the burial in the Lennox Cemetery. Visitation will begin at 2 p.m. Sunday at Dindot-Klusmann Funeral Home with the family present from 2 to 4 p.m.
