Dennis Weeldreyer

Dennis Weeldreyer, age 83, of Sioux Falls, SD, formerly Lennox, SD, passed away, April 18, 2024, at the Avera Dougherty Hospice House, Sioux Falls. Dennis LeRoy Weeldreyer was born on January 26, 1941, at Canistota, SD, the son of Albert and Florence (Wieman) Weeldreyer. He grew up here attending rural school and then graduated from Canistota High School in 1959. He went on to earn his teaching certificate from Southern State Teacher's College, Springfield, SD. On June 2, 1961 he was united in marriage to Helen Hornstra at Monroe, SD. The couple made their home in Lennox, where Dennis began teaching at Lennox High School in 1963, initially teaching business classes and then Industrial Arts. In addition to teaching, Dennis also coached wrestling, track and volleyball and refereed football for over 25 years. He was also a driver's education instructor. Dennis retired from teaching in 1999. Dennis was and active and faithful member of Second Reformed Church, Lennox, where he served on the church council, as Sunday school teacher and as a youth director. He served on the Lennox City Council from 1979 to 1997. He served as Mayor of Lennox from 1997 to 2002. In 2002 he was elected as Lincoln County Commissioner, where he served until 2014. Dennis also was appointed as a Director of Lewis and Clark Regional Water System from 2012 to 2018 and as a Representative of Inter-Lakes Community Action Partnership. He was a member of several other boards and organizations, most recently the Community Board of The Reserve. In his spare time Dennis enjoyed time at his cabin on Lake Poinsett, winters in Port Aransas, TX, fishing, the outdoors, woodworking and various other projects, usually in his garage. Besides his parents, Dennis was preceded in death by siblings-in-law, Kenneth Klinger, LeRoy Brandt and Kris Weeldreyer. Grateful for having shared his life are his wife of over 62 years, Helen; daughters: Laura (Larry) Stoffers, Worthing, Linda (Gary) Klock, Chancellor, Lisa (Roger) Bowie, Sioux Falls and JoLynn (Dave) Roush, Chesapeake, VA; 9 grandchildren & 2 step-grandchildren; 4 great-grandchildren & 5 step-great-grandchildren; siblings: Tim Weeldreyer, Florida, Lois Klinger, Sioux Falls and sister-in-law, Mary Brandt, Sioux Falls, as well as host of other relatives and friends. Memorial services will begin at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, April 23 at Second Reformed Church, Lennox, SD. Visitation, with the family present, also at Second Reformed Church, will be 5 to 7 p.m. Monday.
