Louis Weber

Louis Weber, 95, of Sioux Falls, SD, died Monday, January 22, 2018 at the Lennox Good Samaritan Center. Louis L. Weber was born on January 29, 1922, near rural Hague, ND, the son of Ludwig and Katharina (Gutenberg) Weber. He grew up on the family farm with 11 other brothers and sisters, attending country school in North Dakota. During his high school years he moved to Montana with his older brother Gabe, attending Flaxville High School. After graduating high school, Louis entered the US Navy and served during WWII from 1942 until his honorable discharge in 1946. He served as an aircraft and flight mechanic, tending "submarine hunter" aircraft. Following his discharge, he went on to graduate from Northern State Teacher's College, Aberdeen, SD, with a Bachelor of Arts degree in education and industrial arts. Louis taught industrial arts such as welding, carpentry, drafting, vehicle and small engine repair at many rural schools, including Estelline, SD, Wishek, ND, and Bradley, SD. Louis also held coaching positions for a number of high school sports including basketball, baseball and track. In 1961 Louis was one of the first lay faculty to be appointed at O'Gorman High School in Sioux Falls, where he served until 1973. Louis then took a faculty position with the newly created Vocational/Ag program in Redfield, SD in 1973. He retired from teaching in 1987. In addition to teaching, and during retirement, Louis was a lifelong carpenter and handyman serving many of the families, farms and businesses in the Redfield area until he was well into his 80's. Louis was a member of the Catholic Church. He was also very active in the Redfield American Legion and VFW where he held various offices, serving as post commander, adjutant, and other leadership positions. Louis was preceded in death by his parents and all 11 brothers and sisters (Gabe, Florella, Leo, Regina, Helen, John, Betty, Paul, Katy, Tony, & Jerome). Grateful for having shared his life are his six children: Vince (Beth) Weber, Sioux Falls, Michael (Denise Brown) Weber, Rapid City, Mariann Weber, Panama City Beach, FL, Duane (Marie) Weber, Custer, Richard (Gina) Weber, San Antonio, TX and David (Lori) Weber, Del Rio, TX. He was also thankful for his 8 grandchildren, 4 great grandchildren, many nephews and nieces across the country, as well as friends, including the Willard & Sharon Hieb family, members of the Redfield American Legion, and especially the staff and residents of the Lennox Good Samaritan Center. In honor of Louis's wishes, his ashes will be interred at the Black Hills National Cemetery, in Sturgis, SD. at a later date. Additional private family services will also be held. The family requests that any honorarium be forwarded in Louis's name to the Good Samaritan Center of Lennox or St. Magdalen's Catholic Church in Lennox, SD.
