John B. Marshall

John Marshall, 82, of Sioux Falls, SD, died unexpectedly, on December 29, 2021, at Avera McKennan Hospital, Sioux Falls, SD the result of a stroke. John Boyd Marshall was born on August 20, 1939 in Wilkes-Barre, PA, the son of John Sr. and Florence (Thomas) Marshall. He grew up attending school in Pennsylvania, graduating from G.A.R. High School. He then graduated from Middletown Hospital School of Nursing, Middletown, NY, as a Registered Nurse. From there he went on to earn a degree as a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA) from the Mayo Clinic, Rochester, MN. There (in an operating room) he met his future wife. On June 6, 1964, John was united in marriage to Ethel Dawson at Walnut Grove, MN. John worked briefly for the VA Medical Center in Sioux Falls, SD before entering the U.S. Navy in 1966 serving at the Philadelphia Naval Hospital until his honorable discharge in 1968. After John's discharge, the couple made their home in Marquette, MI before moving back to Sioux Falls, SD in 1971. John worked for Sioux Valley Hospital until 1980, where notably he administered the preliminary anesthesia for the first open heart surgery in South Dakota. He then continued his work as a CRNA at the VA Medical Center in Sioux Falls until retiring in 1999. He continued part time CRNA work in the Dakota Dunes, Yankton and Harlingen, TX until fully retiring in 2005. John's priorities in life were: faith, family, his profession and country. He belonged to the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists (AANA), First Reformed Church in Sioux Falls where he served in many areas, the Sioux Falls American Legion, served as a Delapre township supervisor, active with the YMCA Service Club and at the YMCA (especially leading the youth wrestling program), volunteered for several years in the Man to Man (M2) program. John played saxophone in the Lennox Municipal Band and the Sioux Falls New Horizon Band for many years. He was a member of the Austin-Healey Club of America (AHCA) and had a passion for cars, which included his Austin Healey, Jaguar, 1955 Thunderbird to name a few. Most of all, John was a devoted husband, father and grandfather who deeply loved his family. He was preceded in death by his parents and sister Emily, Steltz. Grateful for having shared his life are his wife of over 57 years, Ethel, children: Jodi (Gary) Fabisiak, Elkhorn, NE; John D. (Sandy) Marshall, Rochester, MN; Jay (fiancée Heather Wells) Marshall, Garretson, SD; seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild as well as a host of other relatives and friends. Private memorial services will be held at a later date, with burial in the SD State Veterans Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to the Lennox Municipal Band, the Salvation Army, the YMCA youth camper scholarship fund or a charity of your choosing.
