George Wallace Carr III

George Wallace Carr III was born December 6, 1952 in San Francisco's Eureka Valley. He loved the secret stairways and mysteries of his childhood paper route and little streets that end abruptly, or the view from Sutro Tower, the wind of Solari Hill. Especially after losing his father as a young teenager, George's naturally open and creative spirit embraced the freedom of the 1960s with a foundation of the love and support of his mother and siblings. His elder siblings Elmer, Kathy and Diane would continue to be his strength for the rest of his life. In the 1970s George left San Francisco with his dog Murphy, learning to drink coffee over hot chocolate when free refills could keep you at the counter longer, sold his comic book collection to travel to Alaska and work in a salmon cannery, picked fruit in Oregon and saw what hippies in Northern California could build as an alternative. Janis might have once passed him a bottle, but he loved and memorized the drama of the great musicals and idolized the grace and charm of another deceptively diminutive man with a right to the company of beautiful women and talented musicians: Fred Astaire. He filled the house with flowers when his daughter was born and sent her cryptic postcards with passages from literature when she left for college. He'd drive you up to a building to admire the architecture of the WPA or to have the wind blow you over. He quoted his mother frequently and she knew him to be fastidious and sweet. He loved language as the living thing it is and liked to be mistaken for an Englishman or to speak pig Latin or give a false name in a restaurant. Above all he wanted life to be beautiful, dramatic and dominated by human connection but the materialism and technology of our modern era left him at times in a confusing isolation. When 1990s San Francisco became overwhelming he spent the next ten years seeking something different in Washington and Oregon keeping the company of whoever would let him be himself, while his wife perhaps saw to more practical matters. For a man born in the '50s he truly sought guidance from primarily the women in his life, and knew them to be precious. An ideal day for him would be to walk around Stow Lake, meet someone at John's Grill, have some Irish Coffee or calamari at The Cliff House and then go home to intently listen to music, watch a film or read a book. I wish he was still making mix tapes whose pacing and words were like a letter just for you. He'll be waiting at the San Francisco Columbarium from this Fall onwards, waiting to find that human connection and an Edenic pastiche that we might all hold dear. He stopped his vigil on this earth July 30, 2026 having spent three years alongside his daughter, in declining health but still fiercely unique.
