Dena Bruns

Dena Bruns, 99, of Lennox, SD, died Friday, July 10, 2020 at Ava's House hospice, Sioux Falls, SD. She had been a recent resident at Lennox Assisted Living. Dena Ardell Buse was born on August 14, 1920, near Lennox, SD, the daughter of Anton and Margaret (Gruis) Buse. She grew up here, attending Vietor Rural School and then graduated from Chancellor High School in 1937. On February 5, 1941 she was united in marriage to Harm E. Bruns at her parental home near Lennox. The couple farmed five miles south of Lennox for three years until moving to the Bruns homestead farm southeast of Lennox in 1944. They moved into Lennox in 1980. Harm died on June 7, 1996, ending a marriage union of over 55 years. Dena was an active and faithful member of Turner County Evangelical Presbyterian Church, where she had served as Sunday School superintendent and was a Sunday school and Bible school teacher. She had served as the moderator of Presbytery Women. She was an assistant 4-H leader and an officer for the Lincoln County Republican Women. She was an active member of the Lennox Senior Citizens. Dena enjoyed gardening and grew beautiful roses. She enjoyed bowling and playing cards. She was an accomplished cook who enjoyed baking and was once named as the Argus Leader Cook of the Week. Dena was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother who deeply loved her family. Besides her husband Harm, and her parents, Dena was also preceded in death by two half sisters: Mae Schutjer and Freda Julian and one half brother, Justus Schutjer. Grateful for having shared her life are her three children: Harley (Linda) Bruns, Lennox, Larry (Sharon) Bruns, Centerville and Janet (Carl) Hallstrom, Sioux Falls; nine grandchildren: Cindy (Dell) Mather, Laurie (Paul) Kruse, Kristi (Chris) Koltz, Jennie (Pete) Holland, Tammy (Kevin) Adney, Lynnette (Soloman) Vargas, Janell (Korey) Horner, Jared Hallstrom and Nikolas Hallstrom; 20 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild, as well as other relatives and friends. Public visitation, with the family present, will be 5 to 7 p.m. Monday, July 13 at Turner Co. Evangelical Presbyterian Church, rural Davis, SD. Private family services will be held Tuesday. In lieu of flowers, memorials to charity are requested.
