Candra Calhoon

Candra Calhoon, 36, died unexpectedly, Sunday, December 23, 2018 at her Chancellor, SD, home of natural causes. Candra Kay Mechels was born on April 11, 1982, at Sioux Valley Hospital in Sioux Falls, SD, the daughter of Darwin and Sandra (Nesheim) Mechels. She grew up in Chancellor attending Chancellor Elementary and then graduated from Lennox High School in 2000. On June 14, 2003 she married Adam Calhoon at the First Baptist Church in Chancellor. While Adam served in the US Army, the couple made their home in Sioux Falls, New York, Kentucky, Texas and Colorado before returning to Chancellor in January of 2014. Candra went back to school and earned her bachelor's degree in elementary and special education from Western Governor's University. She went on to earn her masters degree in math from Western Governor's University and was currently working on her doctorate degree. Candra taught elementary special education in grades K through 5 with the Scotland School District for the past three years. In addition to her own advanced degree home work and class room preparation, she found time to be involved in Project Blue Light. She enjoyed cooking and found a new love for sewing with an antique sewing machine she had acquired. Most of all, Candra loved her family and enjoyed following her children's activities. Candra was preceded in death by one brother, Chad Mechels in 2009; grandparents: Luverne Mechels in 2015, Melvin Nesheim in 2014 and Betty Nesheim in 1995; father-in-law, Jim Calhoon in 2016. Grateful for having shared her life are her husband Adam; children: Aizack age 17, Anna age 16, Alexander age 13 and Ainsley age 10; her parents: Darwin and Sandra Mechels, Sioux Falls; sister, Chastity (Lee) Crowell, Tea; grandmother, Audrey Mechels, Sioux Falls; sisters-in-law, Jamie (Steve) Mechels-Rowe, Madison, Joanna Calhoon, Mitchell and Marie Calhoon, Rapid City; mother-in-law, Linda Calhoon, Winner and many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and a host of friends. Services will begin at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, December 29 at First Baptist Church, Chancellor, SD with burial to follow in the Germantown Cemetery rural Chancellor. Visitation also at First Baptist Church, with the family present, will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday. The family requests memorials in lieu of flowers.
