Arlene White

Arlene White, 88, of Worthing, SD, died Sunday, June 16 at her home, under hospice care. Arlene Ardell Urben was born on May 17, 1931, in Sioux Falls, SD, the daughter of William and Ovida (Thinglum) Urban. She grew attended rural school near Worthing, SD, graduating from Worthing High School in 1949. She went on the graduate from Nettleton Business school and went to work for Sunshine Mutual Insurance Co in Sioux Falls. On November 30, 1954, she was united in marriage to Alvin White at West Prairie Lutheran Church, rural Lennox. They lived in Doton, moving to Canton in 1957 and then to their home farm near Worthing in 1973. Arlene was devoted wife and homemaker who also worked as Senior Companion for over 20 years. Her clients became like family. Each person she visited brought joy to her heart. Alvin died November 1, 2009. Arlene was an active and faithful member of the Grand Valley Lutheran Church. She had many talents, but her favorite was baking bread and cinnamon rolls with caramel sauce. Christmas was always a joy as Alvin peeled potatoes and Arlene prepared the dough for lefsa. It was a family tradition to spend a weekend making lefsa with as many family members as possible, to fire up griddles and flip, cut and package lefsa for every family member. Arlene and Alvin also sold and delivered eggs for many years. Arlene had a heart of gold, a love for family, friends and her pets. Besides her parents and husband, Arlene was preceded in death by a son-in-law, Gerald Niemeier in 2012. Grateful for having shared her life are her children: Bonnie Niemeier (Paul Luedaman), Omaha, Ron "Skip" (Barbara) White, Sioux Falls, Cheryl (Glenn) Benson, Lennox and Judy (Rodney) Hartman, Sioux Falls; special friends, Kathy Albers and Matt Albers, both of Worthing; 11 grandchildren and 30 great-grandchildren, as well as other relatives and a host of friends. Services will begin at 1:00 p.m. Thursday, June 20 at Grand Valley Lutheran Church, rural Canton with burial in the Worthing Cemetery. Visitation, with the family present, will be 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Dindot-Klusmann Funeral home, Lennox.
